somewhere, an easier life
In the first week of July the rains finally stopped. Neglect had already encouraged invaders to propagate through the herb and flower garden—hardy groundsel, leafy thistle, red spears of rosemary willowherb pushing out of the ground, the buds still closed tight—but the watering, even such a Biblical deluge as they had received in the past two weeks, sped along their expansion, and Johannes could no longer abide.

Una Notte a Villa Molinari
The ballroom of the Villa Molinari was bathed in celebratory golden light, the wine was a good vintage, and the service had been impeccable all evening with not even a crooked bowtie to complain about to senior staff, but the sickness that had been incubating in Florian Hohenberg since he’d arrived in Florence two weeks prior had now spread to his blood, and nothing—not the concert, not the dinner, not the party—was capable of diverting his attention.

Nocturne
He extended his legs, partly to stretch them, and partly to locate where, exactly, the girl had chosen to nap. He bumped something soft with the end of his left slipper. An arm, perhaps, or a leg. “Iwashn’tshleefing.”
“Your parents will be wondering where you are,” Johannes replied.

Worms in a Rotten Apple by draculard
“Come now,” said Johannes coaxingly. “You’ve been avoiding me for weeks, Gregor. I’m an old man now. I can’t just go out into the city and make friends the way you can.” He leaned forward and prepared a cup of tea for Gregor, adding a splash of honey-gold rum. “Sit. Indulge me.”
It was hardwired in Gregor to obey. He walked forward with the twitchy gait of a spider, and took a seat at Johannes’ side. Their thighs touched, one relaxed and the other wired.
“There now,” said Johannes, placing the teacup in Gregor’s stiff fingers. “That’s not so difficult, is it?”

Quick Fix by extended fry (FrizzleFry)
